Georgia Loves Baseball
It really is true. Georgia has a special place for sports, but when it comes to baseball, there is just so much to see and do, especially near Atlanta.
Farm Teams
If you aren’t all that familiar with baseball, it’s not like football and basketball where players are recruited directly from college. Players are recruited for feeder teams, called farm teams and then work their way up.
There are a few farm teams in Georgia, but two that you may have heard of are the Rome Braves and the Gwinnett Stripers. Both of these teams feed into the Atlanta Braves. You can see the Rome Braves play at State Mutual Stadium located in Rome Georgia, or catch the Gwinnett Stripers at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Baseball History in Georgia
Some of the sport’s most important figures are from Georgia. Jackie Robinson was from Cairo, Georgia. Ty Cobb, nicknamed the Georgia Peach, was from Narrows, Georgia. Johnny Mize was from Demorest, Georgia. You can visit the historical marker which tells the story of Robinson in his hometown, visit the Ty Cobb Museum in Royston or check out the Johnny Mize Athletic Center and Museum at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia.
The Future of Baseball
As much as Georgia has influenced baseball throughout its history, it is likely that Georgians will continue to play a huge role in the sport. The University of Georgia Diamond Dawgs have played in six College World Series. The Summer Collegiate Leagues showcase some of the top college talent in the nation. The state also has an extensive network of little league teams constantly producing even more home grown talent.
